No matter how much we want to believe that we will never have to seek a divorce, it does happen. Although many times, problems can be worked through, sometimes a divorce is the only 'next' step to take. If this is the case with you – it's important to prepare yourself for the divorce and for taking care of yourself during the divorce. The last thing you want is to be stuck with nowhere to go and no financial means to take care of yourself. This article discusses planning for a divorce and preparing yourself for that divorce.
Money –
It may be the root of all evil, but it is a necessary evil. It is imperative that you have some stashed money to take care of yourself and your children (if you have any) during and after a divorce. Often times, we can see our divorce coming and if this is the case with you – you need to start saving more money. Get an account that is separate from your spouse and that he or she does not have access to. Put back as much money as you can so that you will be able to take care of yourself until the court steps in to help you out.
Financial Records –
It's important that you save financial records or make copies and document them. From your tax info to income and bills – you need copies of everything. You also need copies or records of anything that you and your spouse jointly own – like property, vehicles, etc. During a divorce, your attorney will need copies of all of this information and getting it together now will save time and possibly even save money rather than waiting until the divorce is underway.
Preparing for a Custody Case –
It sounds quite harsh, but it's important that you have items documenting how strong you are as a parent and how weak your partner is. For instance, you may be the one who is involved in your child's school life, doctor and dentist appointments, extracurricular activities and more. This is important because it can help you with custody arrangements. So, begin making a list of the things you do for your children and any shortcomings from your spouse. For instance, if you take your children to the doctor one month, make a note. Let's say your spouse wasn't able to pick up the children from practice three times in that month. Make notes of that as well.
Preparing for After the Divorce –
Many families have one parent who works, and one who takes care of the home and the children. If you do not have a job, you need to determine what your skills are and begin looking for employment. If you are unable to get a job at this particular time, at least begin looking at opportunities. This way, you're prepared for when you don't have any more support from your spouse. You have to have a way to take care of yourself and your children, so begin thinking about that now.
You also want to look into getting the best attorney possible. If you don’t, your spouse could and many times – everything is on the line with a divorce battle. You do not want to lose. Although it can seem as if you shouldn't be secretly planning for the divorce – you do not want to be caught without a game plan. Your main concern is yourself and your children so make sure you follow this important advice.
