After Divorce – Getting Back Your Social Life
0 thumbs up   good

Many times as a marriage begins to fail, we push our old friends and acquaintances away from us. Individuals will either use all of their time and energy trying to reconnect with their spouse and save their marriage or they are embarrassed about the failing marriage and they try to avoid friends that would otherwise be a great help. After you've divorced, getting back into your social life and connecting with old friends can really help you get through the pain and confusion.

Although you may not have had contact with your old friends for months or even years, a simple phone call can remedy that and chances are that your friends will completely understand and be excited about the call. Naturally, when you explain things a bit and your friends hear about the divorce, they are going to want to help. In most cases, their help can be great for you! Whether it's going to their house for coffee or meeting for lunch – it will restore some form of normalcy to your life.

If your friends are also friends with your ex, you may want to avoid talking too much about the situation as you could make your friends feel uncomfortable. However, if they are not friends with your ex spouse, talking about the situation can really be a great form of therapy – especially if you have no one else to talk to about it. You will be surprised to know how great you can feel when you get your feelings off your chest and get some insight from someone outside the situation.

Getting your social life back with your friends is also a great way to meet new people. Eventually (probably after a long time), you will feel ready to begin dating again. Spending time with your friends and going out with them is a great way to come into contact with people you'd like to get to know better. Of course, this is probably something you don’t want to think about right now, but time will change that. There is no need for you to be lonely for the rest of your life and until you do decide that you're ready to date, simply having fun with your friends is a much needed diversion from the pain of a divorce.

If you feel a bit guilty about not having spoken to your friends for so long—don’t worry. Once you explain the situation to your friends, they will understand and be excited to hear from you again. As time moves forward, the pain of divorce will be less and less. Spending time with your friends could accelerate this process and help you feel more normal faster.
